The Earth, my butt and other big round things by Carolyn Mackler
The novel 'The Earth, my butt and other big round things' by Carolyn Mackler is about a typical teenager called Virginia who thinks that her life is going on great until she gets the phonecall that changes her life.
Virginia is a teenager living in New York City and is known as the fat girl or known not to have a boyfriend, which is true she doesn't. Although she has a weekly kissing session with a boy called Froggy Welsh the Fourth, she never considered him as a boyfriend. Later a Virginia continues to live her life her best friend Shannon moves away to Walla Wall, Washington, so that her father can study onions. She then becomes more and more conscious of her body as her mother Phyllis tries to persuade Virginia to lose wieght. she is then paranoid that the only reason why her brother and sister Byron and Anais were invited to glamorous dinner parties is because they weren't fat like she was.
But as if problems weren't already getting worse, Virginia get a phonecall that made all her problems seem so insignificant. She had recieved a phonecall from the dean of students at Columbia University, which was where her brother Byron was attending. Byron had been guilty of date-raping a girl and he had been expelled from Columbia University. Virginia's impression towards her older brother had completely changed, she looked up to him and now after what she had heard, she had no idea what to do...
