Inclusion: Right or Wrong?
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act requires that emphasis be placed on instructing students with disabilities within general education settings to the maximum extent appropriate. Inclusion is the popular way to do this. The argument over inclusion is on going and exhaustive. Some experts swear by it and some believe that it has more problems than solutions. An underlying assumption of inclusion is that all students will benefit academically and socially from learning in integrated classrooms. They idea is that students will develop a greater sense of belonging, gain more acceptance among their peers and adults and increase their own feelings of personal confidence and self-worth. Some of the concerns deal with the time constraints and that it makes it much more difficult for teachers to meet the needs of the individual students.
After reading a great deal of research regarding this topic, talking with practicing teachers, and from my own experience, I got many different views of inclusion. Some research shows great benefits while other highlight the drawbacks...
