Disguise and Deception When Olivia and Orsino meet for the first time in this scene, Olivia’s attention is not on Orsino, but rather, Viola. She sends for the priest who had witnessed the holy matrimony between her and ‘Sebastian” as Viola continually fails to recognize the marriage. Olivia tells Viola to “be that thou know’st thou art”, ironic in perspective to Viola’s false identity. Adding to the tension, the priest confirms the marriage, also falling for Viola’s resemblance to Sebastian. (“and all the ceremony of this compact/sealed in my function, by my testimony”) This infuriates Orsino, who harshly condemns Viola for stealing Olivia’s affections for him.
