The case studies intentionally gave students a great deal of latitude in approaching the problem that was posed in the case summary. I mentioned that these cases as presented are more realistic than textbook case studies because they reflect what little we actually know in a “live” business situation. To address this, some students added detail by creating fictitious companies. Others used similar examples taken from real companies. These were acceptable approaches. In any MBA program, student presentations and papers demand a higher level of research quality, preparation and demonstrated skill. Presentation and paper quality varied across teams. In some cases, even the problem identified was not consistent with the intention of the case study. However, some leeway was granted in this respect. In other cases the problem lacked sufficient detail or explanation. In other words, some teams moved quickly to solutions, even bypassing the identification of alternatives to consider. This is a common mistake, even in real world business scenarios.
