Langston Hughes never sees Jesus. However, his church community would never know. They place him at the front of the church until he becomes "saved." The pressure causes him to lie about accepting Christ. Rather than disappoint his Aunt Reed, and the rest of the church, Hughes "got up and was saved." Langston Hughes's short story, "Salvation," critiques his church community because of the pressure they place on him. The story appears to be a simplistic short story recalling a young boy's emotionally painful experience. Hughes is ultimately disappointed that the people very close to him pressure him into accepting Christ. It is Hughes's belief that approval should not be a factor when making a decision.
