Robert Edward Lee was a significant figure in the Civil war, he was vital because he was the Commanding General for the South, the Confederates. Lee was the main defence for the South, after his surrender, the whole Confederacy quickly collapsed after him. Furthermore Lee was the motivation of the Confederates that they could win the war.
Lee was born on 9th of January, 1807 in Stratford, Virginia. He was the youngest of four children. It is not known where he got the idea of a military profession, however it was definitely in his blood. His father Henry, was a famous patriot in George Washingtons Continental Army, he was known as Light Horse Harry. Harry died in 1818, therefore Lees mother was the biggest influence in young Lees life. From a young age, Lee had the responsibility of taking care of his mother, and it was probably this responsibility that has gave Lee the sense of self sacrifice, which has being portrayed throughout his life.
