Describe law and order in London in the late 19th century
At the beginning there was a growing need to solve the problem of law and order, particularly in the large cities, which had grown up as a result of the industrial revolution. In my answer I am going to describe and explain law and order. I will look at all the aspects of crime and punishment.
The home secretary, Robert Peel, set up the Metropolitan police force in 1829. It was set up in London first because of the severe increase in crime, which just couldn't be controlled, by the out dated system of the constables and watchmen. London had the greatest population in England and the greatest poverty rate, this meant that London had the largest chance of a revolution and this was another factor in the decision to set the first police force up in London.
Between 1870 and 1900 the poverty in London was the worst to ever be seen. This led to a dramatic increase in crime. The crime was generally theft; this was because of the harsh poverty and this sent the theft rate spiralling out of control. The main culprits were the young working class men who had to steal to feed their families...
