All filmmaking has a distinctive way of using time and space. The television series 24 has a unique way of manipulating time and space and by doing so they keep the viewer intrigued and the show is incredibly easy to follow.
The images in the show are arranged in small boxes that display different characters in the show at the same time, the same character, but from a different angle, or the viewer sees through the eyes of the character. When two characters on the show are having a telephone conversation the screen is split in two boxes and you can see both characters reacting to one another. The small boxes are split in either 2, 3 or 4 ways as a widescreen or square screen.
The show is only 1 hour long so the co-creators needed a way to show the viewers as many scenes as possible in that amount of time. The events are unfolded in REAL TIME and you are constantly reminded of what time it is throughout the entire show. Everything the characters are doing is at the time given. By using the boxes to show different characters, the viewers can see more of what is going on in less time.
Another reason why the co-creators probably took this approach is that our society needs things to be clear enough to follow and this was the easiest way to take such an in depth show and break it down in a way that the viewers could follow without difficulty...
