Defining Multicultural Education
The Author points out that there are many different views on what constitutes an appropriate definition for multicultural education. However, he contends that within all of the possible definitions there are, the idea of transformation is key. To the author, the principal objective of multicultural education is the promotion of social change. He denotes " three strands of transformation" as necessary for the achievement of this objective they are:
1. transformation of self
2. transformation of schools and schooling, and
3. transformation of society
In reference to supporting points, details and references, the transformation of self consist of coming to terms with ones own prejudices and understanding the effect they have on others. Also, it accents the duty of the teacher to study, recognize, accept and appreciate differences in culture, so as to better understand and appreciate differences in the classroom environment. One should work toward the benefit of students by modification of ones own ideas. Being an effective teacher requires a discernment of who is being reached by a specific method of teaching or who is being left out...
