What factors make civilization grow and what other factors make them decline?
The history of human civilization is the story of man's success and failure. When we look back on the past human civilizations, we find that most of them were subject to growth and then to decline. It seems that the pattern of growth and decline are as regular and inevitable as those of good and bad climates in the planet's geographical history. The ice age was followed by a warmer period. The present high stage of modern civilization may be followed by a period of decline and misery and poverty.
The reasons for growth and decline of civilizations are varied. But we can isolate some of those, which seem to be common to most civilizations. One basic factor for growth is physical security. Primitive man led a very unsecured and perilous life...
