June 12, 2000, was the first day of basketball tryouts at Wayne County High School. This day and the fours years that followed would significantly change my young adolescent life on a mental and physical level. On this hot, steamy day, fifty girls walked into the old, hot gym; however, the coaches were only going to select twenty of us for the freshman team. The enormous amount of competition intimidated me. We expected the competition to be as easy as our two previous years; our preconceptions disappointed us. We could not turn around now. Our sweaty palms nervously rubbed our moist foreheads. We did not realize it at the time, but playing high school basketball would be one of the most memorable moments in our lives. After we completed tryouts, we had to wait three days before we received the shocking results; we felt impatient, restless, and nervous. Finally, we received the results. I was not certain if my friends and I had made the team. The coach called all the participants into the old, hot gym to receive the news; she began to read the results.
