The Ikhwan enforced a literal interpretation of the Koran and the Hadith, the "traditions." For example, the Prophet spoke against the affectation of luxurious moustaches, so the Ikhwan kept only a short stubble on their upper lip, while letting their beards grow as they would -- trimming them would be an affectation. The Ikhwan also avoided the use of jewelry, silk or gold, since the Prophet had spoken against them. The Ikhwan also proscribed things that were not known in the Prophets time, as well as rejecting foreign imports made by "infidels.
