Was field Marshall Haig the butcher of the Somme
Field Marshall Haig was called 'The butcher of the Somme' because of how many people had died in his command, in the battle of the Somme, but we do not know, there are many arguments for and against it. Haig has been criticised and even called a donkey but other people have said that Haig was a hero.
It could be argued that Field Marshall Haig was the butcher of the Somme for many reasons, the main reason, in my mind was that his methods of training army, and of fighting were very much in the past. He didn't think that machine guns were a good weapon and would rather send out waves of men than use machine guns; He also didn't use the navy to its full use. At the beginning of the war, Field Marshall Haig, hated technology and made his army ride onto battle on horses, which was silly because most of them died in the bad conditions of the trenches. Field Marshall Haig did use tanks in the war, but he didn't like them and still relay on his men to win when he could have used tanks. Before Field Marshall Haig attacked he always-used bombardments, to 'weaken the enemies defences' which just warned the enemy that they were coming so they could prepare. Another reason why people say Haig was 'the butcher' was because of how he was above his army, he stayed in a huge mansion while his men were in the trenches for weeks on end in bad conditions. Haig would freely let people die and at one time thousands of people died for just one mile of land, he also, at another time he lost seven hundred out of eight hundred men in just one battle. He had what many people say is the wrong attitude to war, he once said,' If more Germans die than English live then we will win...
