Specific Purpose: To inform the audience about the history and present day uses of capital punishment.

Transition: From the earliest days of American History Capital punishment has always been a way of punishment in the Americas.
Introduction
It was the spring of 1821, in Salem, Massachusetts, when Stephen Clark a sixteen year old boy was hanged. He was punished to death for setting fire to a barn late one night the previous summer, no one had been hurt, but the fire had spread to some of the other houses in the area. It was a capital crime to be out during the night and he was punished for it.
Transition: While things aren't quite that drastic today, lets look at the roots of capital punishment.
