“Jazz Fusion” has been described as the blending of jazz with rock styles, although fusion music drew from the rhythmic and harmonic aspects of soul music, particularly from the music of James Brown and Sly Stone. The same harmonic material is found in the works of Miles Davis, Bill Evans, and John Coltrane (songs recorded during the late 1950’s and ‘60’s). The characteristics of “jazz fusion” include the use of backbeats, electric instruments, loud volumes, rock textures and intricate ensemble compositions. Miles Davis, the pioneer of “Jazz Fusion”, was one of the first jazz artists to replace horn instruments with electric sounds. Miles was trying to incorporate rock and soul music into his work, while trying to keep a contemporary approach to jazz.
