Comparison of Interrogative Moods in Chinese and English
From the perspective of functional grammar, a clause can express three different but somehow interrelated metafunctions. The first is the experiential function; the second is the interpersonal; and the third is the textual. The second one, the interpersonal metafunction, is significant because it is the function which enables people to interact with other people: to establish and maintain appropriate social links with them. (Geoff Thompson 1996). Interpersonal metafunction is the one that influences other peoples behavior, expresses ones own subjective judgment and evaluation on things and events or trying to find out and/or change other peoples opinions all through the medium of language. In clauses, this interpersonal metafunction is realized through the mood system. The mood system embodies the interaction in the clause which makes it an interactive behavior.
