The story, "The Blanket" written by Floyd Dell, is a story about a man who is getting married to a young woman. This relationship brings to the man's family many problems between the man, his fiance, his son, and his father. He either follows his lover or protects his family.
The story opens with an extended family that lives happy together. Petey, eleven years old (the only named character in the story), is disappointed with his father's decision to send his Grandfather to a nursing home. Petey's father has given his Grandfather a blanket to take with him, and this blanket is described as being warm and fine. Petey's father is to marry a young woman, and he feels it is time to leave his dad behind. Petey and his grandfather spend an evening together. His Grandfather plays his fiddle, and the old songs reflect the joys and the sorrows the family have experienced together. When the father and his fiance return, the music stops...
