Pendulems

Consider the different ways of interpreting Eddie as a character in A View from a bridge Arthur Miller uses the opening scene and Eddie’s relationship with Catherine at the beginning of the play to suggest that Eddie genuinely cares for Catherine and is a family man, he does this when Eddie says “I’m telling you, you’re walking wavy” We also see signs of Eddie warning Catherine not to attract the wrong sort of attention which demonstrates that he really cares for her. If Eddie is shown at the beginning as a nice caring character then people will feel sympathy for him at the end which makes the story a whole lot more tragic. Catherine goes out and shows Eddie what she is going to wear; she shows Eddie her skirt and he says “It’s too short, ain’t it?” which may be interpreted in two different ways. One way would be that he is just a caring uncle but another way would be that he is much too overprotective. Later on in the scene they were all eating dinner round a table together “(sitting at the table) What’s that all about?” this shows Arthur Miller using props to interpret Eddie as a family man. Eddie’s relationship at the beginning of the play with Rodolpho and Marco is quite normal, but when Catherine starts taking a fancy to Rodolpho then Eddie starts to try to put Catherine off him, the fact that Eddie is doing this suggests that he doesn’t want Catherine to get to know him.
