Understanding Gaps In Generations
A generation gap, defined as a broad difference in values and attitudes between one generation and another, can be found in many families. Some are as close as parents and children, some as grandparents and grandchildren, and many are very extreme to the eye, as others are hidden inside our hearts.
As a child born in the fifties, my life was what I describe as normal. My mother was a stay at home housewife, while my father worked outside the home. That was just the way it was. Today many women head the household and men stay at home taking care of the kids. Teenage pregnancy was kept quiet by the women, being quickly married or sent away to have the child in secrecy. Teenage pregnancy today has become very much acceptable and no longer dealt with as a deep family secret. Body piercing was unheard of in my generation, yet now it is the "cool" thing to do. In my generation, tattoos were only seen on men who served in the military...
