I am a professional engineer in the business of facility layout, optimization, and consolidation. It's what
I do all of the time, so I see a lot of examples and have experienced a lot of the same situations over
and over.
A very common question I run into is "Why should an outsider be involved in our company's layout process
in the first place?". The question is sometimes asked outright by the VP who is asked to approve
funding, or is wondered out loud by the manufacturing engineer who has been instructed to work with
me on laying out his or her department's process flow.
The following is a list of the major reasons why a company needs external support when redesigning
