M-Commerce
Introduction
Mobile Commerce, also known as M-Commerce, is the ability to pay for goods and services via a mobile telecommunications network (2). M-Commerce is the sudden increase of applications and services that are available through Internet-enabled mobile devices including cellular phones and PDAs. The goal of M-Commerce is to use wireless technology to allow consumers to conduct business transactions anywhere and at anytime.
Technology Behind M-Commerce
The basis for M-Commerce is wireless technology which uses a network card or cellular technology that transmits and receives information through the air instead of through wires. Wireless networks are limited in range because network cards must be close to the network server in order to have access (3). However, intermediate connections, called access points allow users to access the network via the nearest access point instead of accessing the network directly at the server (3). Wireless devices themselves are evolving into multi-purpose information managers with significant processing power (3). Over the years, they have also been transformed into everyday pieces of equipment.
Telecommunications Infrastructure
The standards and services for wireless systems are still emerging, but currently there are three types of functional services that exist as part of the M-Commerce infrastructure: Wireless Access Protocol (WAP), Application Mobility, and Voice (2).
