Communist Party of India split in 1964 over some ideological issues. The breakaway group came to be known as Communist Party of India (Marxist). The new group aimed at carrying on class - struggle and free the land from the clutches of feudal landlords.
However, a militant faction within the Communist party of India (Marxist) slowly grew restless and started resorting to slogans of armed struggle. That was the time, when a vast portion of arable land belonged to the feudal landlords. In the villages, the erstwhile zamindars retained control over their holding despite the abolition of zamindari system.
The village 'Mahajans' or 'jotedars' had the last word regarding the tilling rights. Local peasants were exploited to the hilt. Most had to work without any wages to fulfill debt obligations. Some had to fulfill the debt obligations of their ancestors and, hence, was forced to work without pay...
