The issue that is being discussed in the article Skin Deep is how humans get different colored skin. The skin color in populations is not random. It was found that darker skinned people are more likely to be found living near the equator. The lighter skinned people are found living closer to the poles. Studies were done to suggest that the human skin color is the result of natural selection. The natural selection helps to regulate the effects that the suns ultraviolet rays have on the important nutrients, those that are crucial to the reproductive success. The UV rays can help the production of vitamin D but can at the same time destroy the folate. The rays can also cause cancer by damaging the DNA.
