"In film and television, our first impressions of people and places are almost always proved right" Consider this opinion with reference to character(s) and/or setting(s) in a film or television program you have studied.
In the film The Piano directed by Jane Campion the first impressions of the characters are almost always proved right. As an audience we gather these impressions from the three main characters, Ada, Stewart and Baines. At the beginning of the film the characters main impressions are evident, Ada's character is reflective of her new situation and gives the impression of her strength and willingness because of this. Stewart shows his apparent dominance and is obviously unable to communicate. Feelings towards Baines at the start are slightly misguided but his character does become more understood.
In the opening scene of the film, Ada, the main character finds herself in an isolated, unwelcoming land and this contributes to the first impressions given by her character. Ada looks sad and weary, and wears black. Her hair is pulled up in a drastic style. As a viewer you can see she follows the certain expectations of the early colonial New Zealand period...
