Outline the ethical system of Christianity and explain how that tradition gives ethical guidance to believers in the area of 'violence, war and peace'
The Christian ethical system is founded on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, as he is 'the way, the truth and the life' (John 14:6). The role of Christian ethics is to provide a guide for Christians so that their daily living and discipleship helps bring about God's reign. The main source of Christian ethics is the Bible, consisting of the New and Old Testaments.
The Old Testament, or Hebrew Scriptures, contains The Ten Commandments, which Christians refer to to this day for codes of conduct. These commandments, also known as the Decalogue, refer to love of God and love of neighbour. They are believed to be the word of God to Moses in Mount Sinai, focusing on the worship of God and respect for other people.
The New Testament, also known as the Christian Scriptures, explores the life of Jesus Christ and reflects on his teachings. After the memories of Jesus' ministry had been gathered, Paul's writings began to appear, followed by the gospels of Mark, Luke, Matthew and John.
