Voltamp Electrical Corporation was incorporated in 1909 to manufacture a specialized line of electric motors, but it diversified and grew substantially thereafter through mergers and acquisitions. In 1955, it had 100,000 employees, net sales of $1 billion and operations in 44 states. Now, in 1956, it was engaged in the design, manufacture, sale and servicing of a wide variety of electrical and allied products. In 1950, the organization shifted from a centralized setup along functional lines (production, marketing, finance and accounting) to a decentralized setup along product lines comprising a pyramid of operating sections, departments and divisions. This was basically done to place decision-making and actual operations close to each other. The “authority, responsibility and accountability” of the section manager had not yet been clearly defined, although each section’s charter broadly defined the product lines for which it was responsible.
