"Jerusalem! Jerusalem, Our most holy city has been delivered to us from the hands of the infidel! We must make a pilgrimage to this city to atone for our sins." This was the cry of many bishops and abbots who encouraged their parishioners to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in atonement for their sins. It is very important to understand the great influence that the Christian religion had on both culture and society in the Middle Ages. It not only shaped the spiritual philosophies of the culture, but also the governments and economic systems in all of Christendom. From the king to the serf, Christianity ruled the thoughts and actions of these men and became not only a religion, but a way of life. One essential part of this way of life was the pilgrimage to the Holy Land, and in order to make this pilgrimage the land had to be safe to cross.# It was the need for this safety that led to later Crusades and the creation of The Knights Templar.
