Everyone needs a connection; a feeling of being understood by someone. Holden needs that connection. Throughout the whole book, Holden is trying to find someone to understand him because he feels like he doesn't fit in anywhere.
Holden tries to try that connection by talking to the taxi driver. Holden asks the taxi driver what happens to the ducks in the winter. But the taxi driver just tells him that he is crazy. Holden keeps on asking him over and over again. The taxi driver doesn't understand why Holden is asking him this. Holden wants to know because he feels like he is the duck in the pond and wants to know what will happen to him. But the taxi driver doesn't see that, and Holden doesn't get a connection with him...
