By defining who we are and what we do, should not place a threat to the survival of the profession. Nursing cannot fully define itself or have the proper control in healthcare if it does not know what it is. Nurses are beginning to unify and state who they are and what functions and roles they deserve to have in the healthcare industry." Nursing stands at a point where art is no longer sufficient, where patient care demands knowledge that can only come from scientific inquiry," (Lysaught, 1974, 134).
While the practice of nursing is very old, the discipline of nursing is quite young. Public understanding of nursing is very limited. Most people think that all we do is follow the doctor's orders. They don't realize that nurses assess the patient's condition, make critical decisions, provide life-saving interventions, teach patients and families about caring for themselves, provide comfort and support and remain with patients during some of the worst and best moments in human existence. Nurses are earning advanced degrees that prepare them to provide primary care, be leaders in healthcare agencies influence the formation of health care policy and do research that can determine best health care practices.
I feel that a greater effort is needed to upgrade the education of nurses who currently practice with less than a baccalaureate level education...
