Bliss by Katherine Mansfield is a short story depicting a woman's misconstrued idealistic view of her husband and of her life. It is full of irony and has quite a twist in the end. Katherine Mansfield was a novelist during the Modernist period. She blazed her own trail and by doing so challenged other writers to exceed their limits as well.
Irony is found throughout Bliss. For example, throughout the whole day Bertha is full of this blissful happiness and at the end of the day she realizes that her husband is cheating on her. She spends the day thinking of how wonderful her life is; she is in love with her husband, Harry, she has a beautiful baby girl and she is hosting a fabulous dinner party with her socialite friends. She invites her new friend, Miss Fulton, although Harry dislikes her. As Miss Fulton is leaving, Harry goes to help her get her coat on. As Bertha observes the quiet interaction between Harry and Miss Fulton, she is struck with the realization that they are having an affair...
