During the summer I read Timeline by Crichton M.. When I read it had many interesting points on time travel, parallel universes, and quantum computers with all sort of modern technology. The book I thought was very good which was able to mix a story with explanations that made sense to me even with my lack of knowledge to physics. I will try to explain some of the points that Timeline had in connection with modern technology that could be possible and its relation to physics.
First of all around the beginning of the story it talked about quantum computers. Today the way CPU's and motherboards obtain higher speed its through having all the components smaller and smaller. The book had a theory that one day they will not be able to get any smaller since it would be almost impossible with the material that they are made from and they would have overheating problems and burn out. Even with computers today overheating is a major problem.
With a quantum computer it quoting from the book "perform calculation based on behavior of particles at the subatomic level." That would be faster than any binary computer out by processing several things a one time not one a time like today..
