In the writing of the Constitution, the Founders had many concerns about the executive branch of government. Some feared anarchy; others worried about a monarchy developing from the presidency. To resolve the problems, some of the delegates proposed that the presidency should be shared between several people so that one would not become kingly or dictatorial.
Many expressed their deeply felt concerns that the president could use his power over the militia to override the state governments. Others worried that he would become corrupted due to the sharing of the Senate with the president of the power to make treaties. They feared that if this was to happen, then the president would be crafty and manipulative.
The main concern was over a reelection. The delegates thought that a president could make use of bribery and force in order to serve another term in office. This would be a common occurrence if the electoral college votes were tied and the vote went to the House.
