Price 1 Kim Price Mr. Wheeler English 101 Exploratory Essay 10-10-02 The Challenge of Same Sex Marriages Is marriage a right in which same-sex couples should have, or should it be holy bond reserved for a woman and a man? Should churches approve of two men being married in the there church, or should they reject it immediately? Americans today have many different ways of answering these questions, and other questions regarding same-sex marriages. Perspectives on this topic vary immensely. While researching same-sex marriages, I determined there were three major perspectives, Approval of same-sex marriages, equal protection for gays, and legally recognizing if same-sex marriages would strengthen of weaken the institution. Author Chris Glaser, in the article “Marriage as We See It,” expresses the first major perspective. He believes that the government, American citizens, and especially the church, should approve of same-sex marriages. Mr. Glaser is a minister in a Presbyterian church in Atlanta, and is also involved in a same-sex marriage (Glaser 465). “I have lived long enough in the gay movement to witness who’s oppose us come full circle in their reason we should be outcast from the church and society,” says Glaser. He also mentions the point that twenty years ago gay love was opposed because it supposedly did not lead Price 2 to long-term relationships, and the rearing of children, you don’t see this that much anymore.
