Northern Ireland conflict involving the Irish Republican Army( IRA) has raged on for decades. Ireland, originally a distinct and independent country, was invaded by Britain and forced to become part of the then British Empire. The British have since held Ireland by force of arms for many centuries, even with the obvious collapse of the British Empire. The IRA's original goal was the complete expulsion of the British from Ireland, and the establishment of an independent Irish government. On December 6, 1921, under a treaty negotiated by Michael Collins, Ireland was split into two entities. To the south, The Irish Free State (now the Irish Republic) and the north, Northern Ireland ruled by the British. The IRA played a large role in removing the British from southern Ireland by force of arms. Although the treaty negotiated by Michael Collins was viewed as a failure by the IRA. The IRA was striving for the complete independence of Ireland from British rule. That goal has been the driving force behind the IRA ever since. Following various peace initiatives, the main paramilitary groups declared ceasefires in 1994.
