What is it- There is confusion about West Nile, there are three separate types of the illness. West Nile virus is not currently found in North America but is closely related to a strain found in the United States. ... West Nile encephalitis or meningoencephalitis however are the most dangerous types and can be fatal if not cared for and looked after by a physician. ... Extreme cases of West Nile encephalitis may have symptoms ranging from fever, muscle weakness and cramps to tremors, convulsions and sometimes comas. ... It may surprise some to learn there is no specific treatment for West Nile illness and may vary from doctor to doctor. Some may have to be put on respirators, airway management, intravenous fluids but stopping the patient from having a secondary infection caused by West Nile is most important.
