March 18: While the a war in Iraq is likely still at least a day away, a U.S. Air Force team in Asheville, N.C., is already fighting a battle in the war against weather. The Air Force Combat Climatological Center, 6,600 miles from the front, may turn out to be one of the nation's most important weapons. March 19: Top members of the Saddam Hussein regime have begun to desert him. Sources in Kurdistan report that deputy prime minister Tareq Aziz visited Turkey and instead of returning to Baghdad headed into Kurdistan and went into hiding under Kurdish protection. March 20: U.S. forces launched a strike against "targets of military opportunity" in Iraq after U.S. intelligence sources indicated they might know the whereabouts of Saddam Hussein. March 21: Ten years after the Gulf War, the United States and Iraq may soon be fighting again. While the enemy is the same, U.S. forces will have some new and upgraded weapons at their disposal. March 22: U.S. and British forces are within a few miles of the key port and oil city of Basra in southern Iraq, having left throngs of captured Iraqis behind in razor-wire pens.
