Glenview, Illinois, is located north of Chicago on what is called the "North Shore" of the city. Actually, since Glenview is not located on the lake, meaning it does not offer any lake front property, it is technically not part of the "North Shore." The people of Glenview, however, want to say they are part of the elite crowd who does inhabit the "North Shore," so through desperation, Glenview is considered to be on "the North Shore of Chicago." Glenview is also my hometown. It is a pretty place to live, with spectacular schools, safe neighborhoods, and close proximity to Chicago. It would seem the perfect place to raise a family. I never questioned my parents' decision to move there, that is until I experienced a cultural difference in my own neighborhood. A little over two years ago, a family that lived on the same street as I did with my family moved away. They were greatly missed, but at the same time there was much anticipation over who our new neighbors might be. Would there be new babysitting charges? Or maybe a young couple who had just gotten married? One day, however, a van parked outside the house and sat there a moment. I happened to be home, and was outside planting flowers with my mother. We watched the van curiously and waited for someone to emerge. Then the door opened, and a figure emerged. It was an African American man, who opened the back door of the van and helped three small children out of the car.
