The Importance of Music Education in Schools
According to a new nationwide survey conducted by the Gallup Organization, 95 percent of Americans believe that music is a key component in a child’s well-rounded education. In fact, more than three quarters of those surveyed feel that schools should mandate music education (author unknown)
Despite the opinions of the people surveyed, music programs in school are still being cut. ... There have to be cuts somewhere - music, sports and any other extra curricular activities are not deemed to be as important as academics.
Unfortunately, what administrators do not understand, is that music plays a huge part in the academic wellness of students. There are on going studies conducted on a regular cycle to prove that music education actually strengthens a child’s learning capacity.
The College Entrance Examination Board found, for example, that students in music appreciation scored 63 points higher on verbal and 44 points higher on the math, than students with no arts participation – and, the U.
