When it comes to maintaining peace in a country, a single society, or among two friends, there are basically two schools of thought that can be implemented. The first method that can be used in peace maintenance is the Idealist school of thought. The driving force behind Idealists is the idea of “collective security”. This mode of thought is contradictory to that of the Realist school of thought. Realists stand behind the idea of “Balance of Power”. There are strong arguments for both of these governing practices. Through the investigation of specific global conflicts, it may be possible to determine, whether or not the Idealist way of life is more practical than the Realist way of life. For the Idealists the idea of “collective security” means that the security of the group is maintained as long as the security of the individuals is maintained. In order for this to work, the entire society, or group, must have faith in the “system”, or governing body. Idealist believe that “violence in general, and war in particular, is abnormal… people don’t want to fight.
