The Old Man and the Sea
By Earnest Hemingway

The old man has very much courage, he has the courage to take on the sharks with whatever he could find. ... ) When the sharks keep coming back to eat the great fish, and he looses his harpoon, the old man made the sheet fast and jammed the tiller. ...
Santiago changes from the beginning to the end because in the beginning he is just a hollow old man who has little luck at catching anything. Having his palms cut up very badly, I think, gives the old man more ambition to catch the fish.
