“In its tumultuous 30- year history, affirmative action has been both praised and pilloried as an answer to racial inequality”(Brunner, 1).
     In order to grasp why one would praise and pilloried affirmative action one would have to understand what affirmative action is, what is its purpose, and what is doing for those who are benefiting from it? So by describing all of the basics of affirmative one can come up with whether they chose to praise or pilloried affirmative action.
Affirmative action means many different things. ... Affirmative action programs have arisen as a result of executive orders, legislation, consent decrees stemming from government investigations, court-ordered remedies, and voluntary action by corporations and other non-public institutions Galston, 3). This is a brief definition of what affirmative action is and why it was established.
The policy of affirmative action was introduced in 1965 by President Johnson as a method of redressing discrimination that had persisted in spite of civil rights laws and constitutional guarantees. Affirmative action was basically set up to get government programs to overcome the effects of past societal discrimination by establishing jobs and resources to members of specific groups, such as minorities and women. ... So basically affirmative action gave opportunities to minorities whom would have not even been given a chance.
Affirmative action polices focused on mainly education and jobs, which try to make sure that minorities were given the same opportunities for promotions, salary increases, career advancement, school admissions, scholarships, and financial aid. ...
So why would one praise affirmative action, because basically enable those who ordinarily would get look over to be given the same opportunities as if they were white male Americans.
