Chapter 1. ª Characters ¨ Winston Smith- Winston is a small, skinny, middle-aged man wearing the blue Party coverall. He has fair hair and ruddy, chapped skin, thin, frail, about 40 years old, intellectual, has a varicose ulcer above his right ankle. ¨ Big Brother- an enormous face, about a meter wide, a face of a man of 45, with a heavy black mustache, and ruggedly handsome face ¨ Emmanuel Goldstein- lean, Jewish-looking, white hair, small facial hair, long thin nose. Enemy of the People. Once was a leading Party member, then escaped and disappeared. Government bases the ‘Two Minute hate on him’ ¨ O'Brien- a hefty, large man with a thick neck and a brutal face. He is in the Inner Party. ª Setting ¨ Air Strip One, formally known as England. Oceania, The city was London. ª Conflicts ¨ Man vs. Nature. (Winston/ulcer) Winston can barely walk with the ulcer near his ankle. ¨ Person vs. Society. (Citizens of Oceania/E. Goldstein) The citizens of Air Strip One with Emmanuel Goldstein. ¨ Man vs. Man. (Winston/ Big Brother) A constant suppressing feeling is overcome by Winston since Big Brother is ‘everywhere’ ª Key Terms: ¨ Big Brother- The watching of all actions of the people by one fictioal or realistic man ¨ Victory- almost a Brand name of every sold product, brainwashes the mind to think it is good ¨ Telescreen- an instrument that is advertising government, similar to a TV only it watches and records what is happening in the surrounding area. ¨ Thought Police- monitor the actions and thoughts of citizens ¨ Ministry of Truth- A governmental organization where false documents to manipulate past events are made ¨ INGSOC- the name of this totalitarian government ¨ Proles- poor people who live relatively unimpeded by Thought Police. Live in the poletarian district. ¨ Newspeak- The language spoken instead of ‘Oldspeak’ destroys the human mind. ¨ Doublethink- A way of thinking opposite of the truth. ¨ Thought crime- Expressing hatred and revolutionary ideas toward the government ¨ Two Minutes Hate: a daily intense, mass rally in which they are primed with fury and hated for Oceania's rival nations, venting their own emotions in the process ¨ Vaporized- annihilated ª Inferences: ¨ Something later on in the novel may involve greatly upon O’Keefe. ª Figurative Language: ¨ Page 25: "The hallway smelt of boiled cabbage and old rag mats." (Imagery) ¨ Page 2: "The voice came from an oblong metal plaque like a dulled mirror which formed part of the surface of the right-hand wall." (Simile) ¨ Page 3: "and the places where the bombs had cleared a larger path and there had sprung up sordid colonies of wooden dwellings like chicken houses?" (Simile) Chapter 2.
