Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck is a compelling novel that illustrates many themes such as dreams, friendship, and loneliness. These themes are portrayed through the characters in the novel. The author shows us that dreams don’t always come true by having one of the main characters die at the end. The author shows us the theme of friendship by having George, Lennie (the main characters) and Slim, and the theme of loneliness by having Crooks, Candy, and Curley’s wife. Throughout this novel the theme of loneliness affects many of the characters. The author seems to show us that it is a natural result of the lives that the characters are forced to lead. What makes Candy lonely is that he is old, and does different work from the rest of the people on the ranch. Candy only has his dog to keep him company, and in the middle of the novel his dog gets killed which leaves him completely lonely until he catches on to George and Lennie’s dream for a while. George is Lonely at the end of this novel because the only true companion that he has is Lennie, and at the end of the novel he kills Lennie which makes him lonely. Curley’s wife could also be considered another lonely character because she married a man that she does not like, and she is the only female on the whole ranch, Curley also forbids her from talking to the other men on the ranch.
