" A short story should stimulate the imagination and hold the audience in suspense. "
Consider this statement with detailed reference to at least two Nineteenth Century Short Stories.
Short stories have been around for hundreds of years but it was not until the Nineteenth Century that the short story came to be seen as a widely popular form of writing amongst many writers, such as Oscar Wilde, Ambrose Bierce, Elizabeth Gaskell .
The short story developed as a popular form at this particular time because of the increasing popularity of magazines and journals. ... Most of the authors of short stories began their careers with these publications in journals.
As these short stories reached a wide audience they often dealt with themes and issues that were considered important in peoples lives. ...
In this essay, Ill comment on how short stories should stimulate the imagination and hold the audience in suspense. Ill also compare two Nineteenth Century stories and relate them to the statement above and also give my personal opinion on short stories and what I think they should be portrayed as.
I agree with the statement because short stories in general intrigue us in many ways because we want to know how the story will end. ...
In short stories, they are often ended with a twist in the tale to make the plot seem more interesting and at the same time exciting; but it also has to be thought- provoking as well as realistic.
In the first story I have chosen to back up this essay; "An Arrest" by Ambrose Bierce, the story-line is effective by catching the readers attention from only the first line. ... " Here the author thought of an opening sentence which will make the audience want to read on. ... This also gives a brief onlook at what kind of story it is from the beginning- A Thriller.
This short story holds us in suspense from the descriptions the author used, for example," The night was pretty dark, with neither moon nor stars visible…" Here we can feel the thrill of the unexpected. It stimulates your imagination by making you wonder what will happen next ; such as someone or something jumping out from the dark bushes or the hero of the story encountering with a terrifying person they thought theyd never see again; similar to this story.
