Book Review on John Calvin
The books that I will be reviewing for this paper are John Calvin and the Later Reformation written by Keith Randall and Calvin and the Reformation by James Mackinnon. After reading these two books, the conclusion was made that both books successfully covered John Calvin’s life from the early years onward. John Calvin and the Later Reformation was a significantly shorter book. It covered everything about his life including the origination of Calvinism which the book Calvin and the Reformation also did. ...
John Calvin was a very important man in the second half of the reformation. ... Calvin was the son of a lawyer with very strong ties in the church. ... He did everything possible to ensure that Calvin would grow up respectful and to hopefully one day join into the priesthood. ... In 1533, John Calvin flees Paris and continues his studies with a number of high rank Protestant friends. Calvin completes his first protestant book in 1536 in which the book was written in latin.
Calvin became a nomadic protestant scholar which seemed to be popular at that time. ...
In the book John Calvin and the Later Reformation by Keith Randall, the information in the book was very clear and concise. The book covers almost everything the book Calvin and the Reformation by James MacKinnon does but cuts a lot of the detail out about other people associated with Calvin such as Martin Luther. This book does provide information on other significant people that surround John Calvin, but it is a much more condensed, easy to understand form. ... Calvin was not a seeker of fame, power or money, his desire was to honor god by ensuring that his instructions to man were correctly taught.
