I believe that one should never make a complaint if he or she does not have a solution to the issue he or she is criticizing. In the case of John Taylor Gatto’s “Against School”, the author’s solution is weak. After making his strong, persuasive argument against compulsory education in his September, 2001 article in Harper’s Magazine, Gatto finishes by suggesting that parents should be able to raise and educate their children themselves. I disagree. Compulsory education is not a problem in itself, but its nature and origin create monumental difficulties in today’s school systems. As Gatto testifies in his article, today’s North American school system is based on an early Prussian system designed to suppress its pupils. Although there have clearly been significant changes in the system since then, there are still remnants of the Prussian ambitions.
