The dance that soon became one of the teen’s most favorite dances was the jitterbug; it was an exuberant dance that they adopted during the war that came from the late ‘30s (“Through the Decades-The 1940s”). The jitterbug included “air steps” which allowed boys and girls to lift each other off the floor and men even tossed their partners in the air and swung them between their legs and around their bodies (“Through the Decades-The 1940s”). ... For one week an adults food ration consisted of 4oz of bacon or ham, 8oz of sugar, 1oz of cheese, 2oz of tea, 2oz of jam spread, 1 shillings worth of meat, and 8oz of fats which only 2oz could be butter, bread was not rationed until post war in 1946 (“Rationing and Utility Clothing of the 1940s”). ... The forties also had professional sports and during the war although they lost many stars to the service the sports kept going through the war, especially baseball (“Through the decades, The 1940s”). ... Women had to make dresses and skirts out of blackout cloth, parachute silk, or the new parachute nylon (“Rationing and Utility Clothing of the 1940s”). Nothing was wasted, everything was saved and used, even pillowcases were trimmed with lace and make into blouses, and the only way to have feminine underwear was to sew it yourself (“Rationing and Utility Clothing of the 1940s”). Makeup was also in short supply and new of a fresh stock of well known branded lipsticks at the local chemist meant that the shop sold out within and hour (“Rationing and Utility Clothing of the 1940s”). Ponds cold cream, Vaseline and vitapoint conditioning cream for hair were the few makeup supplies usually available (“Rationing and Utility Clothing of the 1940s”). ...
The 1940s is an awesome time era in our past and it truly was the greatest decade. ... The past affects the future and the 1940s is a wonderful piece of our past that no one should forget.
