"Pleasantville" is about a teenager named David (Tobey Maguire) who has a strange fascination with the black-and-white television show "Pleasantville. ... He finds that in a big way when the repairman sends David and his sister Jennifer (an open, extroverted and proud girl played by Reese Witherspoon) into the Pleasantville world, on an Alice in Wonderland journey.
To him, the always predictable, ever-perfect lives of the Pleasantville residents, where everyones problems are solved with a big stack of blueberry pancakes, is preferable to the confusing world in which he lives.
The town of Pleasantville is exactly as it appears on television. To the townspeople, nothing exists outside of Pleasantville, and from the perspective of the two newcomers, very little exists within the town. ... They are taken for perfect teens Bud and Mary Sue, but when the two begin introducing ideas extremely peculiar to Pleasantville, things get very strange in Americas perfect town. ... Each person in Pleasantville becomes colored as one or more senses is emancipated but it seemed to me that the color change meant personal emancipation while the surroundings meant the cultural baggage (what David and Jennifer have when they arrive- awareness and the notions that self-expression is important and that being honest with yourself about emotions is vital to life at its fullest rather than the repression induced by the society at Pleasantville). ... Everytime the two teenagers express something new Pleasantville is under the assault of colors: a striking example is the sex phase with Jennifer which causes a chain reaction of curiosity among the boys of the town who discover a new “thrill”.
