Adam Grandmaison For my book report/final assignment I chose to read and write about a book called “We’ve Got Blog”. It is a compilation of essays and writings about the phenomenon known as Weblogging, or Blogging for short. Blogging is a name for a type of webpage that has emerged over the past few years. The book probably says it best “A weblog is defined, these days, by its format: a frequently updated webpage with dated entries, new ones placed on top”. It covers all you might want to know about weblogging. It starts with the history followed by profiles and interviews with well known webloggers, tips and advice on how to have a popular weblog of your own, and finally, articles about how weblogging compares to traditional journalism and what role it plays in such. The weblogging world is one that was perhaps given a title after the creation of the textbook we use in our class. There are actually two elements to a typical Blog. There are the actual written journal entries, which show up immediately when you first go to the site, and then there are the “comments” which appear when you click on a link. For instance, here is a link to a Livejournal maintained by myself: www.livejournal.com/users/righteoussteps . Starting at the top you have the things I have most recently written about, and as you scroll down you will see older and older entries. This portion of my Blog fits into the first environment of the Internet, the World Wide Web. It is similar enough to a typical homepage that for a basic classification, it will do. An element of asynchronous discussion forum (the third environment) is accessed once you begin to explore the “comments” feature. Nearly every Blog entry has the option for a person reading it to comment and leave their thoughts, relevant or not. For example, here is a link to a post I made in my journal a couple months ago that served basically as a roundup of what I did on my weekend: http://www.livejournal.com/users/righteoussteps/3465.html. People who read my journal left all the comments below my entry, and had something to say about it, some of which I replied to, some of which I didn’t.
