The similarities of these women’s experiences makes a significant comment on the
realities of the past and possibly the not so far future , one in which the life of some is
owned by the others. ... She
spends all of her spare time , which is almost the whole day thinking only about two
things , the past and the possible ways that she can get back at the commander and his
wife,” I could burn down the house. ...
Cooper’s poem is trying to show people the societies of the past and the problems with
them so that the people will not make the same mistake again and Atwood’s book is
trying to show how the society is going to be in the future if people do not stand up
against the government’s bad decisions.
